[One-shot] Star Struck
Title: Star Struck
Pairing: Nakamaru/Massu
Rating: PG-13
Genre: Fluff
Word count: 1,563
Summary: It’s just another vacation between best friends, but of course, not everything goes as planned.
A/N: Based on the many mentions (like this one) of NakaMassu’s 2010 Hawaii stargazing trip and how they came across many newlywed couples.
Thanks to
itz_menos for the helpful feedback :D Written for fluff bingo, prompt: vacation.
Nakamaru had just finished a 4-month long concert tour and had a few days of rest before the grueling schedules began again. He was looking forward to spending that time away from the stage lights and screaming fan girls with his best friend under the gleaming stars that Nakamaru has admired since he was a young boy. However, Nakamaru has learned all too well that things hardly ever happen as expected, especially when he wants them to. Presently, he is standing alongside Masuda, staring down the bus aisle flanked on both sides with nothing but couples. They feel like the center of attention, something they are accustomed to as idols, however the purpose of this overseas trip to Hawaii was for them to be anything but.
“Maybe we are on the wrong bus?” Massu hopefully asks. A quick check of the large white numbers adorning the front of the bus that match the small black ones on Nakamaru’s ticket dashes those hopes. So what if they are possibly the only single men on vacation together in Hawaii. To see the vast, star-studded night sky. Just the two of them. Nakamaru swears the idea had sounded much less romantic in his head when he called Massu months ago to plan an excursion when they both managed to squeeze in free time. Regardless, the point of the trip is to have a fun, relaxing time and not concern themselves with what anyone else might be doing, and so, they resign to just settle into two empty seats. The idle chatter around them is hard to ignore though.
“You have a gorgeous diamond ring.” one woman remarks to a young lady sitting across from her.
“We just got married two weeks ago. We’re on our honeymoon!”
“Congratulations! We’re on our honeymoon too!”
Several oddly similar conversations happen throughout the drive to the Mauna Kea summit, where they will be stargazing. Great. Not only is the tour made up of couples. They are all newlywed couples.
“Are you sure you didn’t book some sort of honeymoon package? I know you like to save money, and you did book us a hotel room next to a very un-scenic brick building in Okinawa,” Massu reasons.
“Of course I didn’t! What does Okinawa have to do with it, and I already apologized about that. How many times are you going to bring it up?” Nakamaru defensively snaps back. “We are just two guys that are interested in astronomy. It makes perfect sense to go to a destination that is renowned for stargazing.”
“Really? Because I thought Hawaii is famous for being a destination for romantic getaways,” Massu teases.
“Shut up! I didn’t fuck anything up, okay. It’s just a coincidence,” Nakamaru grumbles.
All Massu does is burst into laughter. Nakamaru can’t help but smile too at their unexpected, but rather ridiculous predicament.
*****
The tour bus arrives at the summit just when nightfall hits. The sky is remarkably clear. Tiny bright specks from the first few stars can even be seen through the tinted glass of the bus. Nakamaru sets up the telescope, while Massu quietly hums NEWS’ weeeek to himself and unpacks their bento. Few words are needed between them. All these years of knowing each other, there’s a natural, comfortable atmosphere to anything they do. Their quiet time of companionship, however, is interrupted when one of the many newlywed couples approaches them.
“We think it’s great that you guys are celebrating your love here. Japan can unfortunately be a difficult place for gay couples. We’re rooting for you!”
“Thank you very much!” Massu says cheerfully. He shakes their hands, bows, and flashes an innocent, bright smile before the couple is off on their merry way. Nakamaru darts his eyes back and forth, mouth agape. What the hell just happened here?
“Taka! Why did you thank those people? They’re really going to think we’re a… gay… couple.” Hoping he sounded stern but inaudible to anyone else, Nakamaru practically hiccups the last words out trying to whisper and hiss at Massu at the same time.
“Yuichi, relaaax. No one knows who we are here, and you know how tiresome it can get, having to explain to people. We do that enough for the media. It’s nice to just go with the flow, right?”
Nakamaru has to admit that talking to one married couple after another that ‘No, they are not together and yes, they are simply friends with a keen interest in traveling’ did start to get unnerving after awhile. Maybe Massu’s reply was not the ideal one he would have thought of, but it did get the couple to go away so that they can enjoy their dinner and the stars in peace.
“Fine, just hand me my bento.” Massu beams at Nakamaru.
By the time they finish their dinner, the sky becomes pitch black, the stars in full view. Nakamaru has his trusty star map out and explains the constellations they can view through the telescope. Every now and then he looks over at his best friend, who intently listens to every word he says. While Nakamaru is pointing out a passing shooting star, he swears that Massu’s face glows, and there’s a distinct sparkle in his eyes. Nakamaru’s breath catches at the sight, and he wonders whether the air is suddenly much too thin at this altitude. Massu notices the stutter. He slides his hand over Nakamaru’s back, rubbing at any tense spots, before bringing it up to his shoulder for a reassuring squeeze. As close friends as they are, Nakamaru is no stranger to such touches. Yet, they all of a sudden feel infinitely nicer. He doesn’t want Massu to let go and even leans into the touch a bit. So not only is the air thin, it’s unusually chilly as well. Yes, that must be it.
*****
The ride back to the hotel is an excruciatingly long one. Everything Massu seemed to do on the summit evoked strange reactions from Nakamaru. He feels like he may be suffering from some kind of altitude sickness. Nakamaru wants nothing better than to curl up in his hotel bed and let deep sleep ease away the weird feeling in the pit of his stomach. Nakamaru feels Massu stir beside him, and suddenly, there’s a head on his shoulder. It’s past midnight, and Massu has fallen asleep. Without even thinking, Nakamaru lifts his arm and curls it around his younger friend.
“Awww, you guys make an adorable pair,” interjects one half of the married couple from earlier.
Shaken out of his meandering thoughts, Nakamaru just offers a small, shy smile and nods. He’s too tired to really do anything else. Oddly enough, the misjudged remark doesn’t bother him as much as it had before. Thinking back to the times spent with Massu, though he’s never consciously thought of his friend in that way before, he realized from a certain angle that they did sort of seem like a couple – often going out just the two of them, companionable silences, comfortable touches. He is happy being with Massu, and now that he thinks about it, he couldn’t imagine traveling like this with anyone else. He wonders if being far away from the spotlight, where no one knows their names, brought out what may have been there just underneath the surface the entire time. As if Massu could sense Nakamaru’s thoughts, he slouches further and lightly encloses his arms around Nakamaru’s waist all the while remaining seemingly unperturbed from slumber.
*****
Neither of them says much from the bus to their respective hotel beds (Massu merely apologizes for having fallen asleep on Nakamaru). The sun would be rising in a few short hours. They can always talk when they weren’t as likely to pass out from exhaustion. Just as Nakamaru reaches out his hand to turn the lights out, the covers lift, and the mattress dips beside him.
“Yuichi, I wasn’t really asleep on the bus. To be honest, I had blurted out ‘thanks’ to the couple earlier at the summit on impulse. It was the first thing that came to mind, but then I wanted to know what it would be like to be closer...Everything just seemed right.”
“Taka, I…I feel the same.”
The words come out in a rush. Nakamaru wasn’t quite prepared for Massu’s admission and how it filled his body with sudden warmth. Not trusting what might squeak out of his lips when there now seems to be a pesky lump lodged in his throat, he reaches out instead, blindly searching until he bumps into fingers and threads them with his own, squeezing gently.
Nakamaru can’t really see Massu in the dark, but he can somehow sense his smile and feel the emanating heat from their close proximity. He takes his free hand and covers Massu’s cheek with his lithe fingers, lightly caressing the slight curve of a dimple with his thumb, before leaning in for a kiss. Massu responds immediately, pressing forward until their bodies meet; their chests easily mold together.
*****
In the late morning, when Nakamaru wakes up and can’t feel his right arm trapped underneath Massu’s firm shoulders, he can’t seem to shake the stupid grin off his face that he knows Massu would tease him for. Maybe everything worked out even better than expected. Nakamaru thinks just going with the flow can certainly have its perks.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-04 02:53 am (UTC)(link)Why haven't you been writing fics before, you obviously have a knack for it.
This is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too cute!! I can't even!! I'm dying of fluff overload *explodes*
You write a good Yuchi XD he's perfectly reasonable yet unreasonable, highly strung, thinking too much, and adorkably awkward.
btw I don't have a dreamwidth account (I don't think)but this is Effi-g in LJ XD I think you are successfully converting me to the ways of NakaMassu *flails*

I consider writing to be one of my weak points so I usually try to avoid it as much as possible OTL
But participating in the Cotton-candy bingo challenge has helped to stretch my creative limits more ^^
I'm really, really glad you enjoyed reading this :'D
NakaMassu are the epitome of fluff for me so I really can't help seeing them any other way XD Ordinarily I would probably have limits to the amount of fluff/sappiness I can stand but with them there are no limits lol
I'm happy Yuichi turned out alright :D/ I watch and read about him enough that it would be a huge fail on my part if I wrote him too OOC :P Now I have to work on writing everyone else better lol
Thank you so much for the lovely comment!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-09 12:41 am (UTC)(link)It's very admirable of you to attempt to start writing, it must be scary posting up your first fic for the public domain. I don't know if I could ever do it, though maybe one day I will try. Writing is one of my strong points, but not creative writing, i'm good at scientific writing.
Anyways, I look forward to your ongoing writing success :P YAY!!! Ganbatte~~~!!!

I really love the support they receive from the other couples lol.
and yeah Nakamaru, of course you're suffering from a type of altitude sickness /nudgewink
This fic is unbelievably cute and fluffy, and I personally think you did a great job on your first attempt at writing fic :)
Sorry that I won't be reading your other fic, I'm just not good with porn =.=;
Which implies that I want you to write another Maruda fic that isn't rated R or above that 8Dlolno subject
Hahaha, maybe they're shippers at heart :P
I think it's NakaMassu. They just magically inject fluff into anything they do and this is what happens lol
No problem, I know it's not for everyone :)
I would very much love to write more Maruda (the one I wrote hardly even counts actually, if at all lol) but for whatever reason, I find it really hard to even get plot ideas for them >___<
They're easy to flail over but hard to write. Does that even make sense? lol
I suppose there are much more possibilities with AU, but I find AU too intimidating to tackle orz
But anyway, thanks so much for taking the time to read this and giving such a nice comment, Eza. I really appreciate it <333

MY HEART. EM. THIS IS BEAUTIFUL. i love how everyone thinks they're gay-married (because they ARE) and how massu trolls him about it and his eyes sparkle and nakamaru thinks it's altitude adjustment and then massu fakes a sleep to get CLOSER and they both have FEELINGS and yes yes yes yes.
PLEASE KEEP WRITING I WILL CHEER YOU ON FOREVER.

I'm so glad you enjoyed reading this and thank you so much for all the encouragement <333
I'll try my best to keep writing :D

(Anonymous) 2016-12-03 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)I just watched Nakamaru's interview where he talked about his trip in Hawaii with Massu so I just had to read your fic again! I'm sorry if I didn't comment before but I've read this a lot of times especially when I'm missing NakaMassu. Youe fic is just too cute, sweet and realistic! xD
